Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between waist circumference(WC)and metabolic syndrome(MC)in adolescents.Methods The levels of height,weight,WC,blood pressure,FPG,TG,TC,HDL-C and LDL-C were m...Objective To investigate the relationship between waist circumference(WC)and metabolic syndrome(MC)in adolescents.Methods The levels of height,weight,WC,blood pressure,FPG,TG,TC,HDL-C and LDL-C were measured in 98 school adolescents.Results Metabolic syndrome was observed in 6 of 49 cases(12.2%)in abdominal obesity group.Approximately 95.9% of abdominal obesity group had at least one metabolic abnormality.Significantly higher weight,BMI,SBP,DBP and TG levels were found among the abdominal obesity group compared with control group.The level of HDL-C was declined.The prevalence rates of high BMI,SBP,DBP,TG and low HDL-C in abdominal obesity group were higher than those in control group.There was significantly association between WC and BMI(r=0.694),weight(r=0.878),SBP(r=0.508),DBP(r=0.391)and LDL-C(r=0.398)(P0.05).Conclusion A significant correlation between WC and the metabolic syndrome is found in our study.The measure of waist circumference may be helpful for the detection of metabolic syndrome.Read More
