Title: Inflammatory Response to Cardiac Surgery and Therapeutic Strategies
Abstract: A general activation of inflammatory response can be observed during any operative procedure,as physiological response to surgical stress.Cardiac operations under cardiopulmonary bypass support may activate the inflammatory response through distinctly different mechanisms.Perioperative stress response represents the increased risk of myocardial and pulmonary complications. The clinical consequences of stress response termed'systemic inflammatory response syndrome' may result in life-threatening organ dysfunction. To understand this complex interplay of inflammatory response and to develop the strategies to restrict the resultant organ dysfunction, the iteratures of various mediators for such inflammatory response, the role of surgical stress, the pathogenesis of organ damage, and strategies to overcome this response are reviewed.
