Title: The Diachronic Evolution of the Grammatical Function of 'SHI'(示)
Abstract: 'SHI'(示) is a Chinese lexical item, which used to function as a free-morpheme-word originally. It becomes to be used as a bound morpheme around Qing dynasty.'SHI'(示),as a verb,on one hand, gets losing its obligatory transitivity to optional transitiviry, through syntactic-semantic changing process, and by the means of which,on the other hand, the syntactic freedom gets declining in terms of scale.More concretely spreaking, behaving as a three-valence and ditransitive verb is the typical syntactic property of 'SHI'(示) in Pre-Qin period, and then, the two-valence usage gains more prominant status through Late Han dynasty, subsequently,as illustrated by investigation of data, the ratio of its usage as a monosyllabic word declines obviously, and syntactically more restricted. While travelling to Qing dynasty,it turns out that 'SHI'(示) has be morphemized into a bound morpheme.
