Title: On the Formation History of Pu Tong Shi Yan Jie and Xi You Ji
Abstract: In the research on Xi You Ji(West Travel Notes),Pu Tong Shi Yan Jie(Popular Interpretation of Folktales)is often cited to demonstrate that Xi You Ji had taken its shape at the end of Yuan Dynasty,This pa- per argues that this proof is not well grounded,The earl.lest edition of Pu Tong Shi Yan Jie,which was pub- lished in 1667,was recompiled at the end of Yuan Dynasty,However,as a Chinese textbook in Korean times, it had been revised twice in Ming and Qing Dynasties,These revisions, which involved not only the events in Yuan Dynasty, but also the events in both Ming and Qing Dynasties, reflected the development of Chinese Lan- guage and the transformation of the society behind the Chinese Language,Therefore,it cannot be taken for pure text of Yuan Dynasty for citation,Compared with Pu Tong Shi Yah Jie,all the existing Za Ju(poetic drama set to music),artistic works and stories of Yuan and early Ming Dynasties, which tells and describes Tang Tseng' s pilgrimage for Buddhist scriptures, appear much simpler, hence arousing suspicion that the story-telling narration of Xi You Ji in Pu Tong Shi Yan Jie probably had been modified and supplemented in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
