Abstract:For a long period prior to 1979,Chinese historical research has been dominated by theory of the Five Modes of Production.According to this theory,the whole history of China as well as other parts of w...For a long period prior to 1979,Chinese historical research has been dominated by theory of the Five Modes of Production.According to this theory,the whole history of China as well as other parts of world has been developed from first MOD to last one,succeeds one by one.The modernization theories prevailed during 1950s~1960s gave another uni-linear model of historical changes.For example,W.W.Rostow designed a Five Stage rank as a universal framework of economic development,every society could find its position in this uni-line.The task of less developed societies is just accepting modernity from modernized-developed societies to make advance in rank.Thus modernization is a uni-direction movement as well as a uni-linear process.After 1979,modernization as a new paradigm has been accepted by an increasing number of Chinese historians.The increasing depth and breadth of academic research has encouraged such an acceptance,but,admittedly,as a new conceptual system that corresponded to historic break and new direction towards modernization in China,this acceptance also showed crisis of paradigm,that is,the contradiction between new theme and old ones that had dominated Chinese humanities and social sciences.The Modernization Paradigm based on monistic multi-linear theory considers modernization as a unique breakthrough of history,a great transformation around whole world,and a historical process without a given ultimate aim and value but with different models and routes.It has an open,embracing sense of different schools in historical studies.A variety of historical paradigm is favorable to flourish of Chinese historiography.Read More
