Title: Measurement and Numerical Simulation on Multi Dimensional Flows in the Swirl Three Branched Pipe
Abstract: The exhaust system has an important influence on the performance of internal combustion engines. On the basis of the MPC exhaust system, the authors presented a new swirl exhaust system in which the branch pipe obliquely intersects the main pipe along tangent direction. The system makes the gases ejected from branch pipe produce a spiral motion around the axis of main pipe, which can reduce the collision loss of gases between the branch pipe and main pipe and can also prevent the interference of scavenging and decrease the losses of the second flows in the cross section and the recirculation flows in main pipe.In order to understand the swirl system deeply, the three dimensional particle dynamic analyzer (PDA) was used to measure the velocities of the steady turbulent cold flows in the swirl three branched modular junction located at the end of the exhaust system, and three dimensional numerical simulation of the flows was carried out by use of the ALE algorithm. The calculating results have a good agreement with the measuring ones and embody three dimensional features of the flows in the junction.
