Title: A comparison between 0.5% levobupivacaine and 0.5% bupivacaine epidural anesthesia
Abstract: Objective To evaluate the differences between 0.5% levobupivacaine and 0.5% bupivacaine epidural anesthesia. Methods 80 patients of either sex aged 18~45 years(ASA Ⅰ~Ⅱ), undergoing lower abdominal or lower extremities surgery were randomized to receive 0.5% levobupivacaine epidural anesthesia ( n=90) or 0.5% bupivacaine epidural anesthesia (n=90). An epidural catheter was placed at L1-4 and advanced approximately 3~4 cm in the epidural space toward head. The observed variables included the onset time of sensory and motor block, the degree of motor block. The upper level of sensory block and the quality of anesthesia. Results The onset time of both sensory and motor block were similar between the two groups (P0.05). The sensory block upper levels of levobupivacaine group were slightly lower than those of bupivacaine group(P0.05), but the highest block levels reached L3 level in both groups. The motor block was better in bupivacaine group than in levobupivacaine group. There were no significant differences in blood pressure(BP), heart rate(HR) and pulse oxymeter measured oxygen saturation(SpO2) between two groups(P0.05).Conclusion Levobupivacaine and bupivacaine have similar efficacy and safety when used in epidural anesthesia.
