Title: Anatomical study and clinical use of lengthening nail-bed
Abstract: Objective To investigate the practicability and security of lengthening nail-bed by anatomical study and clinical use of nail-bed. Methods The nail-bed( nail-body and nail-root) was anatomically measured on 20 Chinese adult finger specimens (female 10 , male 10). The nail-bed defect after injury in 20 patients was repaired by lengthening nail-bed. Results The average length of the nail from the thumb to the little finger was 19.1mm, 17. 6mm, 17.5mm, 17.0mm and 16.0mm in male, and 18.3mm, 16.0mm, 16.1mm, 15.7mm and 14.9mm in female. There was no significant difference between the left and right side. The length of the nail in female was markedly shorter than that in male. The mean nail-root length from the thumb to the little finger was 5.1 mm, 4.6 ram, 4.9 mm, 4.7 mm and 5.0 mm in male, and 4.4 mm, 4.6 mm, 5.0 mm, 4.8 mm and 4.5 mm in female. The average length of the nail-body from the thumb to the little finger was 15.6mm, 14.0mm, 13.6mm, 13.3mm and 12.1mm in male, and 14.9mm, 12.4mm, 12.1mm, 11.9mm and 11.4mm in female. Lengthening of the nail-bed was done in 20 cases with nail-bed lengthened for 3 - 5mm. Conclusion The length of nail-root under eponychium is 4 - 6mm in 20 cases, which is 22 percent of nail-bed. Lengthening nail-bed can inibrove the appearance and function of the injured nail.
