Title: The definition and concepts of Overseas Chinese: Transformation of the discourse
Abstract: Overseas Chinese play a dual role as a community of the Chinese immigrants abroad. The terminology 揙verseas Chinese has underwent great changes in different periods of history by sharing different connotations. Before the Opium Wars, they were addressed as Tang people, 搃nferior citizens, and aliens. Afterwards, they became piggish, coolie, and Chinese labor. At present, unified addresses are still unavailable. The paper holds that Overseas Chinese holding a Chinese citizenship are on a sharp decrease because their dual nationalities are not accepted by the Chinese government since the founding of the Peoples Republic of China. Therefore, the term 揙verseas Chinese has lagged behind times, and it should be replaced with Chinese or an integrated version 揅hinese Overseas.
