Title: Investigation of bone mineral density(BMD) of lumbar vertebrae and proximal extremity of femur in Dalian youth
Abstract: Objective Approach the current situation of BMD of Dalian youth and the influence of exercises on BMD and provide scientific basis for prophylaxis of osteoporosis. Methods The bone mineral density of 2~4 lumbar vertebrae, femoral neck, Ward's triangle and greater trochanter of 486 (males 226, females 220) healthy Han nationality youth in Dalian city were measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometer. The anthropometric methods were used to measure the stature and body quality of the same group of people. Results 1. The values of bone mineral density of 2~4 lumbar vertebrae, femoral neck, Ward's triangle and greater trochanter in males were 1.107, 1.028, 0.901 and 0.883,in females were 0.978, 0.963, 0.859 and 0.847 respectively. The values of males were obviously larger than those of the females, and there were significant sex differences(P0.05). 2. The bone mineral density of regular exercises groups of males and females of Dalian youth were higher than those of irregular exercises groups, and there were significant differences(P0.05). 3. The general bone mineral density of Dalian males and females youth was lower than that of inland areas of China, while higher than that of the southern areas. 4. There was a positive correlation between the stature, body quality, the index of body mass and the bone mineral density. Conclusions The general status of bone mineral density of Dalian youth is in the middle and lower level. There are significant sex differences in bone mineral density. Exercises conduce to increase the bone mineral density.
