Title: Effects of comprehensive oral health promotion among primary school students in Ningxia Province
Abstract: Objective To determine effects of comprehensive oral health promotion on oral health knowledge,behavior among children,and to provide reference to oral health promotion strategies. Methods Four urban primary schools from the same province in western China were selected through multistage sampling. All the students( n = 562) in grade 5 were investigated as intervention group. Students( n = 480) of grade 5 from another 4 urban primary schools were chosen as control group. Results Regarding correct rate of oral health knowledge,intervention group was higher( 37.01%) than that of control group( 7.50%). About 89.01% students in the intervention group knew that it should go to doctors if gum bleeds when brushing teeth,while only 53.75% students in the control group knew it. About 43.24% students in the intervention group never eat sweet foods before sleep,while the proportion was 12.50% in the control group. About 78.04% intervention group students brush teeth twice a day,and students in control group was only 42.50%. More students in intervention group( 55. 31%) had Pit and Fissure Sealant than control group( 17.72%). During the past year,about 28.38% of intervention group students accepted periodic check,while the control group was only 10.87%. Conclusion Oral health knowledge and behaviors significantly improve in the comprehensive intervention group. Oral health programs in school settings should be developed and implemented.
