Title: English Reporting Sentences:Functional and Pragmatic Perspectives
Abstract: Traditional Grammar regards the direct reporting(the direct speech) and the indirect reporting(the indirect speech) as equal reporting means, conventionally summarizing the changing rules of persons, adverbials of places and time, and tense, etc.from the direct reporting to the indirect reporting. The emergence of discourse, pragmatics, and cognition studies have given rise to some new developments in the study of speech reporting. However, these studies have not laid enough emphasis upon the speech reporting itself from the functional and pragmatic perspectives. At the same time, the motivation of the changes from the direct reporting to the indirect reporting has not been pragmatically explained. This paper intends to find out differences between direct reporting and indirect reporting in passing on information, and to explore pragmatic motivations of the change from the direct reporting to the indirect reporting.
