Title: Study of Research-Oriented Graduate Training in China——Based on survey data from 14 national key universities
Abstract: A survey is made of 2,800 research-oriented graduate students of 14 national key universities about their training, specifically their background, admission experience, process of study, assessment, living conditions,self-evaluation,and suggestions.Findings include:an overall low percentage of innovation-inspiring courses, late start in the first research project, inadequate preparations for degree theses, insufficient independent research work, and relatively few high-level research outcomes. It is an important task for universities to establish an effective graduate training mode to foster top-notch scholars. This mode should be characterized by an integrated system incorporating baccalaureate, master's and doctoral programs;an innovation training framework based on research topics, questions and projects;an evaluation system that well balances responsibilities, rights and interests to encourage instructors to devote their energies to student training;an exploratory-type curriculum that emphasizes research, frontier studies and innovation;more funding for graduate education;an innovative academic environment, and the formation of a knowledge innovation community of teachers and students.
