Title: Brief Analysis of Cultural Differences in Kinship Terms between English and Chinese and Translation Skills
Abstract: Language is the carrier of culture;kinship terms are not only a part of language but also a kind of culture.The differences in kinship terms between English and Chinese reflect the cultural differences between East and West to some extend.From the analysis of meanings and usages of kinship addressing systems between Chinese and English,this paper reveals the cultural implication in the systems.The main causes for cultural differences lie in the family structure,consanguinity,patriarchy concept,culture adoption and courtesy principle.Through the analysis of the features and usages of the two systems,the paper can help readers to understand the cultural differences between Chinese and English.Based on the differences in titles and kinship addressing systems between Chinese and English as well as their complicated pragmatic intentions and cultural implications in use,the paper systematically analyzes the two systems to reveal their respective culture-specific implications.Finally,three methods are presented on how to translate addressing forms between Chinese and English.
