Title: The Main Differences between Marxist and Western Marxist Cultural-Historical Criticism
Abstract: The relationship between literature and history is one of the fundamental issues of Marxist literary theory. From the perspective of the classic Marxist concept on the relationship between economic foundation and superstructure, this paper attempts to point out the major differences between Marxist and Western Marxist cultural-historical criticism: the former, while laying special stress on the relationship between literature and history, believes that literature and art which belong to superstructure are decided by certain social economic foundation and at the same time reflect history and social reality, thus bringing to light the ultimate origin and nature of literature and art; whereas the latter emphasizes more the complexity of the relationship between economic foundation and superstructure and the forming influence of the latter on the former or their mutual action and reaction. Although Western Marxist critics also believe in this relationship, they pay more attention to literature itself and its independence, subjectivity and actual presence as well as its function of changing history and society.
