Title: Significance of HPV infection and p16 expression in cervical squamous cancer
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To detect the expression of HPV16/18 and p16 in cervical squamous cancer, and discuss their significances in genesis and development of cervical squamous cancer.METHODS From Dec 2008 to Dec 2010,72 cases of cervical squamous cancer samples,32 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia samples and 28 cases of normal cervical tissues samples were collected in this study. The HPV16/18 and p16 were detected by situ hybridization method and immunohistochemistry method, respectively.RESULTS The positive rate of HPV16/18 in cervical squamous cancer was 59.7%,which was significantly higher than that in normal cervical tissues(7.1%) and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(12.5%).The positive rate of p16 in cervical squamous cancer was 79.2%,which was significantly higher than that in normal cervical tissues(7.1%) and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(34.4%).Of 72 cases with cervical squamous cancer, the expression of HPV16/18 was significantly associated with FIGO stage(P=0.038),but showed no significant relationship with age, tumor size, cell differential degree and lymphoid node metastasis(P0.05);the expression of p16 was significantly associated with FIGO stage, tumor size and cell differential degree(P0.05) but showed no significant relationship with age and lymphoid node metastasis(P 0.05).CONCLUSION The expression of HPV16/18 and p16 in cervical squamous cancer are significantly increased, and associated with clinical data, suggesting that they play important roles in genesis and development of cervical squamous cancer.
