Title: Direct Material Input and Domestic Material Consumption of Shanghai's Economy
Abstract: The method of material flow accounts and analysis is applied to investigate direct material input and domestic material consumption of Shanghai's economy with an objective to facilitate its circular economy development and management in the next five years in this study. The method used is basically in line with economy-wide material flow accounts and derived indicators,a methodological guide, published by Eurostat in 2001.Some estimations have to be made as there are lots of particular difficulties in regional material flow accounts and great scarcity in relevant data in Shanghai. The conclusions reveal that the proportion of domestic extraction to direct material input is very small in Shanghai while direct material input in 1990-2005 shows a growing trend as a whole, reaching to 45.56 million tons in 2005.Direct material input per capita is considerably high, and it can be seen from the fact that direct material input per capita in terms of Hukou in Shanghai in 2005 is 33.50 t/person and it has been equivalent to the higher level of that in the developed countries in 1990-1996 since 1996,and the eco-efficiency of direct material input is relatively low, which is 2 009.04 yuan RMB/t in 2005 and approximately one-fifth of that in Hamburg in 2001.
