Title: Analysis of Metaphor and Metonymy in English Cooking Vocabulary
Abstract: Cognitive linguists assume that metaphors and metonymy are not only figures of speech, but also two thinking patterns of human beings. The essence of metaphor is to understand and experience one kind of thing in terms of another.Metonymy is a cognitive process in which one conceptual entity provides mental access to another conceptual entity within the same idealized cognitive model. The theory of metaphor and metonymy offers a new perspective to study the change of lexical meanings. The cognitive mechanisms of metaphor and metonymy play a vital role in the semantic extension of the English cooking vocabulary.
