Title: Urbanization in the First Thirty Years of PRC:A Historical Re-examination
Abstract: This article is an attempt to review China's urbanization history under socialist commanding economy occurring in the PRC's first thirty years.The article sees the production of China's urban space as a form of modernizing the Chinese state and an integral part of global urbanization process,which cannot be narrowly separated from social demographic changes and urban spatial sprawl.The article focuses on the relationship between the urbanization and industrialization,institutional conflicts between state planning departments and industries,local governments, work units regarding resource allocation,and their influence over reconfiguration of urban and rural space.The author disagrees with theanti-urbanorde-urbanizationlabels once,and still alive today,added to that specific period and tries to clarify such misunderstandings through quantitative and qualitative methods.
