Title: Analysis of the thermal performance of thermal energy storage systems using PCM capsules
Abstract: Simple model was developed for analyzing the thermal performance of thermal energy storage systems using PCM (phase change material) capsules. The model could analyze the thermal performance of such a unit, including the timewise fluid temperature variation and the phase change interface distribution along the axial direction, the timewise variation of the heat transfer rate, the thermal storage capacity, the effective heat transfer coefficient, the effective heat transfer area, and the molten/frozen mass fraction. The model considered the influence of some parameters such as sphere diameter, PCM characteristics, heat transfer fluid characteristics and velocity on the thermal performance of the unit. The model was verified using experimental data from the literature. It can be used for designing and analyzing the thermal performance of thermal energy storage systems using PCM capsules.
