Title: Studies on Synthesis of Benzyl Propionate Using Environmentally Friendly Catalyst
Abstract: Benzyl propionate was synthesized in high yield by the esterification of benzyl alcohol with propionic acid in the presence of a new environmentally friendly catalyst, H β zeolite. The results obtained indicate that H β zeolite possesses a fairly high catalytic activity for the esterification reaction. The effects of benzyl alcohol/propionic acid molar ratio, the amount of H β zeolite catalyst used, reaction temperature and time, and the amount of cyclohexane used on the yield of benzyl propionate have been investigated. The yield of the ester obtained under the typical reaction conditions (H β zeolite/cyclohexane/benzyl alcohol/propionic acid=1.5 g/20 mL/1.15 mol/1 mol at 160 ℃ for 3.5 h) was 77%. H β zeolite catalyst can be easily recovered, and reused after regeneration to give almost the same yield of the esterified product as that given by fresh zeolite. The catalytic activities of β zeolites modified with some cations, except for H + ion, were also investigated.
