Title: On Cultural Semiotics——Semiotic Analysis of Cultural Semiotics
Abstract: This paper introduces the cultural semiotics of Moscow-Tartu School represented by Yuri Lotman: its birth, concern and central topic, its theoretical basis(relevant theories of Moscow-Tartu School,Bakhin School and Kristeva), a survey of the cultural semiotics and its prominent features. The analysis of the cultural semiotics reveals that it has inherited and at the same time questioned the Saussurean linguistic and semiotic tradition. It has absorbed the relevant theories of Bakhin and Kristeva of its own tradition while taking in those of Peircean semiotics of the other tradition. Therefore we can view it as a convergence of the two traditions and as an evidence of the trend of turning towards each other and converging of scientism and humanism, the two opposite strands of the modern philosophy of the West. The Saussrean linguistics and semiology focuses its study on linguistic and semiotic signs in social communication while the Peircean semiotics on the signs in the cognition of man as a biologic body. The cultural semiotics combines the study of communication with that of cognition, and combines the study of the social nature of communication with that of psychological activities of individuals in cognition thus viewing cultural interflow as social communication and cognition.
