Abstract: Jixi Basin, located in the east of Heilongjiang Province, has a natural gas show in 1985,but only about half of the basin is effective exploration area, where hydrocarbon kitchens are partially destroyed, geological conditions are complex and exploration risk is high.It is mainly filled with Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments, and Lower Cretaceous is divided into Jixi and Huashan Groups, with the main coal bearing series Jixi Group being also a target for petroleum exploration.Dongrong Formation(K 1d) contains dark mudstone of bay lagoon facies, and Chengzihe Formation (K 1c) and Muleng Formation (K 1m) are coal and carbargillite of marsh facies. In Yongqing Formation (E 2y), there is a well developed dark mudstone of deep lake facies. The types and vertical distribution of source rock are controlled by sedimentary sequences.Although porous reservoirs have lower porosity and permeability, fractured reservoirs are practically meaningful. There are also source reservoir seal assemblages, and the gas found may derive from Lower Cretaceous coal bearing strata (K 1c and K 1m),with thick mudstone and tuff beds serving as a seal.As a gas bearing basin dominated by coal generated gas,Jixi′s main discoveries will be gas accumulations. It is suggested to search for gas in Lower Cretaceous of Lishuzhen depression and for oil in Paleogene of Pingyangzhen depression.
