Title: Study on Engineering Behavior of Red Clay in Southwest Mountain Area Qingdao Geological Engineering Investigation Institute
Abstract: The issues in relation to the red clay in the mountainous area in the southwest are outstanding, accordingly, the technical and engineering problems are complex and difficult. The proper use of foundation treatment method and earth-rock filling technology requires to study the mechanical properties of the red clay at first. The tests results show that: ①The undisturbed sample of the red clay has high porosity ratio and low compressibility; when the pressure increases, the consolidation coefficient of the red clay at different depth increases; its high natural shearing strength indicates the undisturbed red clay has high water content, large porosity ratio and high plasticity. ②The disturbed sample of the red clay has medium compressibility; the consolidation coefficient is maximum on condition of 400 ~ 800 kPa; as the compactness increases, its permeability coefficient decreases; in the test of saturated consolidation shearing, the internal friction angle increases with the increase of the compactness; in the triaxial test, shear failure generally arises on the weak plane; as well as in the unsaturated triaxial UU test, the cohesion increases significantly with the increase of the compactness and the compactness has minor effect on the internal friction angle, which indicates that the strength of disturbed red clay increases significantly with the change of unsaturated suction, and the water stability is so poor that the strength may decrease rapidly when the clay is immersed into water.
