Title: CAI Qing's Development and Expansion from ZHU Xi's Original Meanings of the Zhouyi——Taking His Annotations of Two Idioms as Case Studies
Abstract: CAI Qing's research on ZHU Xi's Benyi (Original Meanings of the Zhouyi) proceeds along with weighing every word of the book. He gave prominence to an overall understanding to ZHU's Commentaries and expanded ZHU's views with discriminations of certain characters. In comprehending the idiom of Bao he tai he (lit.,keeping the great harmony),CAI Qing interpreted this idiom as that the Shi li (Substantial Principle) is full and permeating into all corners of the universe, which was in alignment with ZHU Xi's purport of the all-inclusive and full Dao (Way) of Heaven based on his Principle. CAI noted the differences between Ge zheng xing ming (lit.,Each thing rectifies its true nature and destiny) from Bao he tai he,and differentiated li (lit.,advantageous) from zhen (lit.,correct),pointing out that though Ge zheng (rectification of each) was driving to Principle,Principle can not exist without Qi. In examining the idiom of Ji shan cheng xing (lit.,succeeding kindness to accomplish one's nature),CAI affirmed the endlessness of dynamic and static and asserted that the Dao (Way) resides in yin (static) and moves in yang (dynamic),which forms two aspects of one process; he also stressed the position and function of the Dao and argues that Ji shan (succeeding kindness) and Cheng xing (accomplishing nature) are complementary and there is no absolute differences between them; he admitted that human nature possesses both kindness and evilness, which developed CHENG Hao's assertion that both kindness and evilness are attributed to nature and Principle contains both attributes of kindness and evilness, and specified ZHU Xi's criticism of Mencius' theory of human nature that Mencius' theory only argued on human nature but neglected Qi; moreover,he argues that the importance of kindness does not lie in the integration of quality but in the differences of quantity.
