Title: Significance of serum vascular endothelial growth factor in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancers
Abstract: Objectives:To evaluate the significance of serum vascular endothelial growth facotr(VEGF) in the diagnosis and the determination of curative effects of lung cancers. Methods:Serum levels of VEGF in 30 healthy controls, 34 cases of pneumonia, 29 cases of patients receiving radio and chemotherapy and 96 lung cancers were measured by a sandwich enzyme immunoassay(ELISA). And the results were analyzed with respective clinicopathological factors. Results:Significant differences in the VEGF levels were observed between the controls and the lung cancers( P 0.001) and also between pneumonia and lung cancers( P 0.05).Metastasis was commonly seen in the lung cancer patients who having higher VEGF levels after surgical resection(12/21).X ray irradiation can induct the tumor cells to secret VEGF.The patients having increased serum VEGF levels in 60 days after rediotherapy will have a higher rate of tumor recurrence and metastasis than those with non increased serum VEGF levels. Conclusions:Serum VEGF level is a useful marker for lung cancer diagnosis, tumor metastasis and recurrence.
