Title: A interpretation about the rhetoric of Shu Li(黍离:Millet luxuriant)
Abstract: In composing the poem Shu Li,which is collected in The Book of Songs, the poet took advantage of a rhetorical form of arranging different words and phrases in the two consecutive sentences so as to be understood through co-reference.Though the poem describes the growing of Shu and Ji from seedling through earing to seed-bearing,it,in fact, indicates the elapsing of time from spring through summer to autumn, thus denoting the long period of time during which the poet had to serve corvee for the sovereign, and expressing the untold suffering he felt in his heart. This writing technique has been producing a positive effect on Chinese poetry and prose writing of later generations.
