Title: On Finite Element Analysis on Stress Profiles around Broken Fibers in Unidirectional Composites
Abstract: The local stress concentrations around a broken fiber embedded in fibrous composites have been analyzed by finite element techniques. The effect of fiber volume fraction on stress transfer has also been investigated. The results show that stress disturbance due to fiber break is typically localized. In other words, the nearest neighbor fiber carries the main loads transferred from the broken fiber. The stress concentration in unbroken fibers decreases quickly as the axial distance from the broken site increases. In addition, the stress concentration becomes pronounced with larger values of fiber volume fraction. This study can provide the theoretical basis for damage and failure modeling of fiber reinforced composites based upon micromechanical analysis of damage.
