Title: THE MODE OF PERIPHERAL NERVE REGENERATION AFTER END-TO-SIDE NEURORRHAPHY
Abstract: ve To study the origin of the regeneration axon and the mode of nerve regeneration after end-to-side neurorrhaphy. Methods 10 SD rats were randomly divided into two groups: Right common peroneal nerve was amputated . The distal stump was sutured to the ipsilateral tibial nerve by the end-to-side way through an epineural window in one group . In the other group, both the severed ends of the nerve were ligated as the denervated control. The left legs of all rats were taken as normal control. After 2 months, all the rats were subjected to electrophysiological and histological examination . Results Electrophysiological test implied that the regeneration axons in the recipient nerve were the lateral axon ingrowth of healthy donor nerve. Histological test showed two modes of axon regeneration - along or span epineural sheath in the way of downward and return from the sutured site. Conclusion Lateral axon regeneration can be induced from the healthy donor nerve after end-to-side neurorrhaphy, and there are 2 modes of growing in recipient nerve observed in the study.
