Title: STRUCTURAL IMPROVEMENT OF THE ENGINE HOOD BASED ON THE NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF THE VECHICLE CRASH
Abstract: The complete finite element models of a passenger car, the occupant restraint system and the detailed structure of the hinge, which affects the safety of the car in this model were presented. The crashing of the car at 48.3*!km/h into a rigid wall was successfully simulated and the results were found to be consistent and in good agreement with the crash test. The data of the simulation also predicted that the hinge of the engine hood would fracture during the crash. This fact was validated by the test. The failure of the hinge is a great danger to the driver and the occupant. So according to the simulation, the material of the hinge is changed to the high strength steel and the structures of both the outer and inner panels of the engine hood are modified, and as a result, the hinge would not fracture and the deformation mode of the hood is improved, and also the risks of the occupant injury decrease.
