Title: Analysis of Adverse Drug Reaction in Elderly Patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Abstract: Objective To investigate the adverse reaction of common drugs used in treatment of elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).Methods Adverse effects were recorded for 192 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients who aged more than 65 and received oral medications from 2004 to 2006.Results Adverse reaction occurred in 34 patients.Among them, adverse effects were observed in 30 patients received the medication of α-receptor blockers:24 received Terazosin and 6 received Doxazosin;and in 4 patients received the medication of 5α-reductase inhibitor-Finasteride.There were 24 patients whose adverse reaction occurred within 3 days:22 with α-receptor blockers and 2 with 5 α-reductase inhibitor. Conclusion In the treatment of BPH,α-receptor blocker(Terazosin hydrochloride) showed higher adverse reaction,as compared with 5 α-reductase inhibitor. The administration of Terazosin should be initiated from the dose of 1mg and taken at bed-time,and the patients should also be informed of the possible adverse reactions of terazosin, because the elderly patients have poor tolerance to antihypertensive agents and poor baroreceptor reflex which can easily result in postural hypotension. If adverse reaction occurs,it is necessary to adjust medication plan in time.
