Title: CHARACTERISTICS OF STRUCTURE AND MINERALOGY OF INTERFACE LATERITE IN WEATHERING CRUST OF CARBONATE ROCKS
Abstract: It exists a special clay layer between bed rock and upper laterite in the weathering crust of carbonate rock. The layer is called “the varicolored clay layer” and usually is composed of tiny laminae with purple, red, brown , yellow, black, grey, and white colors. Through detailed field observation and sampling tests of mineral composition taken from Anshun and Zunyi, we can find that “the varicolored clay layer” is of important significance. Except for common minerals such as kaolinite, halloysite and illite, there are many new unstable minerals, such as montmorillonite, chlorite, vermiculite and some interstratified clay minerals in it.They are gradually changed into stable minerals from bottom to surface.
