Abstract: The lack of motivation is largely responsible for the recession in students' English learning seen by some newly established universities.The paper probes the circumstances under which the four principal English learning motivations function and their effects on students' English learning achievements.Some tentative strategies for empowering the students' English learning are also ventured.
