Title: The Social Background of Chinese Officials' Investigation on Japanese Army In Late Qing Dynasty
Abstract: It is a special period in the military reform in late Qing dynasty from 1898 to 1911. A large amount of military officials had been sent to Japan to investigate its military affairs. They went abroad and were the first to contact the advanced military systems, strategy and tactics. This paper primarily studies the social background of Chinese officials' investigation on Japanese army in late Qing dynasty and indicaties that it is a gradual process. First, while having been invaded by foreign power several times, the military conception of Qing government had changed. Second, they had tried to follow the German pattern to train their forces. Thirdly, with all internal and external factors functioning together, there was an upsurge in the investigation on Japanese army in late Qing dynasty.
