Title: Study on Spatial Polarization of the Yangtze River Delta since the 1990s
Abstract: There has been huge progress in economic development of the Yangtze River delta since the Reforming and Opening Policy. Many new characteristics of regional space pattern also appeared. This paper takes 67 cities/counties within the Yangtze River delta as basic units, seeks economic and social development composite index of each unit in 1991,1998 and 2005 by the method of principal component analysis. The paper studies spatial polarization characteristics of the Yangtze River delta through comparing changes of composite indexes of units. It is shown in the research that polarization is still the primary character of spatial development in the Yangtze River delta.New developing polarization has appeared, however,it still centralizes in the core area which takes Shanghai as the central city. Thus,it intensifies the centralization of essential factors in core areas, while the edge presents a relative slow development situation. The economic activities are inclined to economic center, transportation corridor, and river and coastal region obviously. The regional development strategy, the infrastructure construction, direct foreign investments, rural industrialization and the private-owned industrial cluster are the main reasons for spatial polarization. With enhancing the core status of Shanghai and regional infrastructure construction, spatial structure of the Yangtze River delta may change obviously.
