Abstract: Zhang Yong-kang was a famous poet of northwestern Guizhou during the Qing Dynasty.He had an outstanding literary talent,a profound knowledge and a remarkable fame,showing an undoubted influence upon northwestern Guizhou,Guizhou generally and even China,Twelve Poems of the Hardship Way particularly demonstrated his misery consciousness.Misery consciousness germinated in the Yin and Zhou Dynasties and formed in the Warring States Period,it had an influence upon feudal society and the present age and was steeped in Confucianism.It is not only an important component part of Chinese national cultural tradition and active national spirit,but also one of the themes of ancient Chinese poetry.The misery consciousness of the poetry of Zhang Yong-kang is the inheritance and development of the ancient poetry with higher social and aesthetic values.
