Title: COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF THE ELECTROCARDIOGRAM WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE GENESIS OF THE U-WAVE
Abstract: The genesis of the U-wave of the electrocardiogram(EKG)had been studied. In the surface EKG of the isolated toad heart, the U-wave always followed thepotential change induced by the activity of the arterial cone(hereafter denotedas A-wave)and disappeared after sectioning of this structure. The U-wavecould also be elicited by stimulation of the arterial cone. The surface EKGrecorded from the aorta cone and pulmonary arterial cone of the isolated rabbitheart usually showed a notch on the QRS complex and a relatively conspicuousU-wave.It was argued that the A-wave as led from the toad heart or thenotch on the QRS complex of the surface EKG of the rabbit heart wascaused by the depolarization of the myocadial cells of the arterial cone and theU-wave was caused by the repolarization of the mentioned structure.Thepossible implications of the changes of the U-wave under certain pathologicalconditions had been discussed on the basis of the results reported.
