Title: Subcategorization Account of Differences between Two Relative Clauses in English
Abstract: The difference between English restrictive clauses and non-restrictive relative clauses is the former obtains the function of subcategorization, while the latter does not. Those which can be modified by a restrictive relative clause are the unspecific nouns in a certain context, which need the subcategorizational function to upgrade their demonstrability and recognizability;those which can not be modified by a restrictive relative clause are the specific nouns, for they can not be further subcategorized,so they can only be modified by the non-restrictive to supplement themselves. The result of the research indicates that from the perspective of subcategorization, the account of the differences between the two relative clauses in English and the constraints on the antecedent nouns are both well-justified and convincing.
