Abstract: The appositive clause introduced by that differs largely from the attributive clause introduced by that both in expressions of meaning and grammar rules, but they are likely to be confused due to their similar appearances. As a consequence, they could easily bring about mistakes in understanding, writing or translation. According to the expositions of Quirk, Leech and some other grammarians, the authors of this article suggest that the two clauses should be distinguished according to five criteria.
