Abstract: According to Freudian tripartite personality structure, the mind is composed of three parts: id,ego and super-ego.Healthy personality depends on the coordination of the three parts.Prof.Peter,the protagonist in The Professor's House, considers perfect spiritual state his lifelong ideal pursuit. The power of super-ego puts him in an honest, noble state, while the snobbish commercial society runs completely against his seeking. The suppressed id,and the worsening ego environment eventually lead to the imbalance of the three parts of his personality. It is inevitable that his ego is lost and finally distorted. In a degree, the theme of The Professor's House reflects the deep reason for the change of Cather's later literary creation.
