Title: The Historical Significance of Revisiting of “Mahayana Not Being Buddha” in Modern Japanese New Buddhism Movement
Abstract: The new Buddhism movement is one of the Buddhism reform movement in the late Meiji Japan. As one of its features, the movement advocated free discussion and criticism on Buddhist teaching. Hurugawa Isamu and Nisiyori Ichiroku, the leading characters in Japanese New Buddhist Movement paid the lead attention to the view of Mahayana Not Being Buddha, which had been discussed from the Edo times, and based on that, they declared Buddhism entered into the age of doubt. They advocated historical and critical study of the Buddhist teachings. Their study laid a good public and theoretical foundation for Murakami Senjō and other people's study on the same subject, with a profound impact on the study of Buddhism history.
