Title: Expression of c-fos Protein in the Nucleus of Tractus Solitarius and Dorsal Motor Nucleus of Vagus after Gastric Electric Stimulation in Rats
Abstract: Background: Gastric electric stimulation (GES) can entrain gastric slow wave, but its mechanism is not fully understood. The expression of proto-oncogene protein c-fos can be taken as a marker for activation of neurons. Aims: To invest-igate the neuromechanism of GES in modulating the gastric slow wave by observing the expression of c-fos protein. Methods: Female Wistar rats were randomly divided into control group and four GES groups. GES was performed to control gastric slow wave in GES groups, then the rats were sacrificed 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 hours after one hour-GES. The expression of c-fos protein in the nucleus of tractus solitarius (NTS) and dorsal motor nucleus of vagus (DMV) of the central bulb was observed by immunohistochemical method. Results: c-fos protein in NTS and DMV expressed weakly in the control group. Thirty minutes after GES, its expression increased progressively and reached the peak one hour after GES, but reduced gradually subsequently. Conclusions: GES can entrain gastric slow wave. The marked change of c-fos protein expression in neurons of NTS and DMV indicates that the vagus nerve may be involved in the modulatory effect.
