Title: Efficacy and Safety of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine Treatment for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Abstract: Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Metformin plus self-prescribed Chinese herbal recipe for nourishing yin and clearing heat,Yangyin Qingre Recipe,in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) with yin deficiency and excessive heat syndrome. Methods One hundred T2DM patients with yin deficiency and excessive heat syndrome were randomly divided into two groups of observation group(N = 60) and control group(N=40).Both groups were given oral use of metformin,0.5 g every time,3 times a day,and the observation group was treated with the decoction of Yangyin Qingre Recipe orally, one dose a day, administration for twice. Both groups followed strict dietary control during the treatment, and the treatment lasted 8 weeks. The main symptoms and signs, fasting plasma glucose(FPG),2-hour postprandial glucose(2hPG),serum total cholesterol(TC) and triglyceride(TG) were observed before and after treatment for the evaluation of efficacy and safety. Results The total effective rate was 96.67% in the observation group and was 77.50% in the control group, indicating that the observation group had better efficacy on clinical manifestations(P0.05).FPG,2hPG,TC and TG were improved in both groups after treatment(P0.05 or P0.01 compared with those before treatment),and the improvement in the observation group was superior to that in the control group(P0.05 or P0.01).The observation group had less side effects during the treatment(P0.01).Conclusion Metformin plus Yangyin Qingre Recipe is effective and safe for the treatment of T2DM patients with yin deficiency and excessive heat syndrome.
