Title: Effectiveness of Captopril in Combination with Low-Dose Hydrochlorothiazide for Systemic Hypertension
Abstract: Aim: To study the efficacy of captopril (Capoten, Sino-American Shanghai Squibb Pharmaceuticals. Ltd) in combination with low-dose hydrochlorothiazide in hypertension and its effect on metabolism. Methods: Fifty hypertensive patients were randomly divided in two groups. Group 1 :captopril 12. 5 mg-25 mg bid or tid. Group 2 :captopril 12. 5 mg bid plus hydrochlorothiazide 12. 5 mg qd. Both group were treated for 8 weeks. Blood pressure, 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure, metabolic parameters such as fasting blood glucose, blood lipid, blood potassium, urea nitrogen and creatinine were evaluated before and after drug therapy. Results: Total response rate in group 1 was higher than that of group 2 after treatment. No metabolic parameters change was observed in both groups after treatment. Conclusion: Captopril in combination with low-dose hydrochlorothiazide are more effective than captopril alone in the treatment of hypertension. No adverse effect on metabolism was found.
