Methods The visual acuity of daily life was checked in elderly people and then a thorough ocular examination was performed. The vision was corrected if there was any refractive error in cooperated patients. Other necessary examinations were performed if any ocular disease was suspected. The mean value of visual acuity before and after refractive correction was analyzed. The risk factors which caused the visual acuity decline, low vision and blindness were analysed by Logistic regression. Results The mean value of visual acuity of daily life in people aged 80 and over was 0.57±0.44.The incidence of blindness and low vision among them was 3.93% and 5.46% respectively. The mean value of corrected visual acuity was 0.72 ± 0.43, with significant difference with uncorrected value. There were averagely 2 ocular diseases in each elderly people.Cataract was the most common one, followed by glucoma and optic nerve atrophy. The main disease which affected the visual acuity of elderly people was macular degeneration. Conclusions Not only the ocular diseases but the refractive error and age related degeneration factors caused the decline of visual acuity in elderly people. Therefore, to improve the quality of daily life of elderly people, all the above risk factors should be treated.Read More
