Title: Study on the Effect of Principal Stress Orientation on Tunnel Stability
Abstract: In order to investigate the effect of principal stress orientation on tunnel stability, the whole process from initial damage to complete failure of rock was investigated through the methods of experiment and numerical simulation. In the numerical study, the maximum tensile strain criterion was adopted, and an equivalent stress was defined. The equivalent stresses at the points around the tunnel were calculated, and the results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The results showed that the initiation and propagation of cracks occur mainly along the direction of principal stress;the failure patterns vary as principal stress orientation changes. The maximum failure stress appears as the angle between the major principal stress and the tunnel is about 60°,and the minimum appears as the angle between the major principal stress and the tunnel is near 45° or near 90°.
