Title: Sperm DNA fragmentation and outcome in vitro fertilization in men with varicocele
Abstract: Objective To verify the impact of varicocele on semen quality, sperm DNA intergrity and in vitro fertilization. Methods The sperm chromatin dispersion test was employed to detect the sperm DNA fragmentation in 103 infertile men with varicocele and 37 healthy fertile male.At the same time, the classical semen parameters including sperm concentration, progressive motility and sperm morphology were evaluated.Furthermore, outcome of in vitro fertilization in men with varicocele were evaluated. Results Men with varicocele had lower ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, progressive motility, morphology, and higher percentage of cells with DNA fragmentation than those in the control group.Compared with our homochronous total data, men with varicocele had lower fertilization rate and lower cleavage rate, but no signinficant difference in the biochemical pregnancy rate. Conclusion Varicocele could increase DNA fragmentation, and decrease the classical semen parameters, fertilization rate, cleavage rate of in vitro fertilization.
