Title: A Study of the Syllable Structure in the Interlanguage of the English Learners
Abstract: This paper investigates the syllable structure in the interlanguage of the English learners based on formal linguistics, and shows that the consonant clusters do exist as syllable onsets in the interlanguage. In the word medial position, obstruent+sonorant is the only well-formed cluster as the onsets, while in the word initial position, the highly marked cluster s+stop can be onset as well. The phonotactic knowledge of onsets is formed by the constraints such as *obstruent+obstruent and *obstruent+sonorant which are hidden in the native language grammar, but dominant in the interlanguage. The result proves that the language universal plays an important role in the interlanguage grammar.
