Title: Effects of propofol on cell apoptosis in ischemia-reperfusion injury in rat brain
Abstract: AIM: To study the effects of propofol against cell apoptosis due to ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rat brain. METHODS: Sixty healthy male SD rats, weighing 290-310 g were selected. Modified Longa model of focal cerebral I/R injury was used (2 h ischemia and 2 h reperfusion). These SD rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: sham operation group, I/R group and propofol pretreatment group. After operation, rats were killed and brains were removed for the detection of apoptotic neurons using TUNEL staining combined with electron microscopic examination. RESULTS: The number of apoptotic neurons of propofol group was significantly less than that of I/R group and sham operation group(P0.01). The TUNEL positive rate, and apoptosis rate were significantly lower in propofol group than those in I/R group (P0.05). CONCLUSION: Propofol pretreatment decreases neuronal apoptosis induced by I/R, which relieves the brain injury caused by I/R.
