Title: Effect of hyperglycemia on functional outcome of the patients with spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage
Abstract: Objective:To investigate the effect of hyperglycemia on functional outcome of the patients with spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage. Methods:Data of 335 patients with spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage were retrospectively studied. The patients were divided into two groups according to modified Rankin Scale scores:good functional outcome group and bad functional outcome group, and the demographic and clinical characteristics in both groups were compared.Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve was adopted to evaluate the predictive value of blood glucose on functional outcome in the patients with spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage and multivariate Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate independent predictors of functional outcome. Results:In 335 patients, good functional outcome group had 147 patients and bad functional outcome group had 187 patients. The patients in bad functional outcome group were older, and had higher NIHSS scores, higher blood glucose levels, larger hematoma volumes, and more frequent hematoma extensions to the ventricle(P0.05).On constructing a ROC curve,a cut-off value of 7.8 mmol/L provided a moderate predictive value(area under the ROC curve=0.79).The multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that NIHSS score, hyperglycemia(blood glucose level≥7.8 mmol/L),and hematoma volume were independent predictors of bad functional outcome. Conclusion:There is a significant association between hyperglycemia and the bad functional outcome of patients with spontaneous supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage.
